Joey Nania and Partner Will Butler Top 40 Finish in Packed Field, Alabama Bass Trail North #1: 40th Place and a Paycheck

Guntersville, AL, February 28, 2015 – The Alabama Bass Trail organization (www.alabamabasstrail.org) launched its second season with a full house hosting 206 teams on LakeGuntersville.  The one day event is the first of 5 regular season events that qualify teams for a championship as well as providing a road, possibly, to the Bassmaster Team Championship and ultimately one berth in the Bassmaster Classic.

The tournament was threatened by 6 inches of snow the previous day, but warming (at least over 32 degrees) helped melt the snow prior to launch on Saturday. “I am used to fishing in cold weather, but not down here!  Every year in Washington I used to fish and event called The Frostbite the first weekend in November.  I was on the winning team in that one once, and I won by second Junior Bassmaster World Championship in 2008 in November in Kansas where it was 24 degrees with a 20 mph wind.”  Joey recalls, “That was way colder than this, but this is cold enough!”

Joey and Will fished hard all day, lost one bigger fish, but were somewhat satisfied with 12.08 pounds on 4 fish, considering that more than half the field blanked!  Neither of them thought they would make the top 40 which provides a paycheck, and they watched as their names crept down the list.  Finally, they closed the scales and, “We ended up in 40th place and got a check!  We were both thrilled.  A 40th place check is way better than nothing and the points at that level keep us in the running for the championships.” Joey commented. “That makes two tournaments, two checks so far this year.”(Referring to his 18th place finish in Florida in the Bassmaster Southern Open event in January.)

The event was won by Josh Bragg and Joe Hartley with 28.94 lbs, with second place team Tim Cornelius and Doug Webster finishing 2nd by only 1/100th of a pound at 28.93.
