Family Fishing Fun and Vacation in Northern Wisconsin - Personal Best Musky! (By Joey Nania) See New Photo Gallery

Spider Lake Chain, Hayward, Wisconsin - By: Joey Nania - What else would I do for vacation but go fishing!  I drove straight from Table Rock all night long to get to Northern Wisconsin to join my family for our 60th annual rendezvous on Spider Lake!  The primary target there is family fun and true musky hunting.  I love to bass fish and also really love to hunt muskies.  They are an amazing fish.  They kill their prey before they eat it, kind of like a wolf.

Most of the Nania side our my family makes their way every year to this great place on the Spider Lake Chain and we do get a little competitive about our annual Musky King (and Queen) competition.  I have repeated as King four years in a row and this year was extra tough because I missed the first whole week of fishing.  My Uncle Jimmy jumped out with an impressive start and continued to catch 23 muskies total for the two weeks.  However, he had no legal (34 inch) fish in his boat.  I went to work targeting big muskies and my first morning out I nailed the one in the photo here on a black bulldog. That is a big rubber thing that has two huge treble hooks and one big hook on the back.  I was fishing with my cousin Jason (eventual Bass King for the two weeks) and my buddy Jake Ford from Oregon.

No kidding, I pulled up to this spot, hucked the bulldog out there and started the retrieve...WHAM...she ate it and I pounded her with the hook set!  My dad and Uncle Jay were in a boat nearby and when they saw the net go up they came over with cameras blazing.  The official measurement was 41 inches on the nose.  My personal best!

I went on to catch 5 more fish that week.  Of the six that I caught 4 were easily legal and as is usually the case quality out did my Uncle Jim's quantity so I 5-peated as family Musky King!  What a great fun time and tons of family love and friendship.  We are truly blessed by God to have such a wonderful family and friends and to be able to get together every year!
